Scary times a Brewing centering about MMOs

Postby Elric of the void » Thu Sep 10, 2009 9:43 pm

Let me preface this by saying this,
::THIS IS NOT FAKE::
A company by the name of World.com holds the patent for MMOs.
They are currently targeting NCSoft as their first target.
More to follow.
Here are all related articles on it,

Intentions to go after all other major MMOs in the same fashion:

As a little comfort based on what I've researched I ahve two bits of good news.
A) The patent should be rejected:
http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2009/0 ... d-june-14/
B) The suit was moved out of austin texas and into California one of the central Hubs of MMOs in the World.

Here is the actual patent:

A little scary, but I doubt something this established in the gaming market will be subject to much of a penalty, if any. If this hurts the MMO market these 4 people will join Hitler among the most hated men ever:
Dave Leahy, Judith Challinger, B. Thomas Adler, S. J. Ardron

this is gonna fail miserably Everquest was out before 2000 (which is when the patent was filed). Also what about D and D which is ideally an MMO without the GUI. There is no way this will stand firm. If it does then fuck it looks like MMOs are done.

There is no way this will fly. Vague patents don't mean shit.
