You have to understand, the movie uses alternate universes.

There's a tangent universe that is introduced that has a lifespan of 28 days (after the jet engine falls to earth). If Donnie doesn't correct the problem (i.e. the jet engine), the tangent universe will collapse and take the primary universe with it. Donnie is given supernatural powers by Frank (the freaky rabbit) to correct the problem.

Have a read of the wiki page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnie_Darko

Look at the Director's Interpretation.

I agree though, this movie is a mindfuck.

agreed with foxx, i wasnt going to reference the wiki, but the theories foxx talks about are the generally excepted theories behind the movie.

ive seen it 3 times. that theory might be sound but if that really is the plot, it's fucking ridiculous.

apparently it has to do with what is inside the book that lady death wrote and the director or whoever apparently explained it on the DVD

Sorry for the necro, but I got around to watching the film a couple weeks ago.

The theory is not sound, imo. Frank the bunny cant exist which means no movie. If the theory were to actually form any logic the movie would begin and end with the engine falling and killing Donnie.
