New Router?

Postby Tanis Half Elf » Fri Apr 09, 2010 4:27 pm

I have always thought that buying a "better" router or "gaming" router doesn't really
make a big difference. I think I heard this somewhere, but I want to clear it up. I was
talking to a friend about a month ago and he spent about $80 on a new router.
On WoW he decreased his ping by a whopping 30% percent compared to his
generic router the isp gave him.

Right now I am using a generic router my isp gave me. Will I get a good decrease
in ping if I get a "better" one? If so, what are some routers you recommend?

The price outweighs the benefits, if any. The actual hardware in any router isn't going to impact your performance unless you're using a really fast connection and transferring an equally proportionate size of data that needs to be buffered.

from my experience with routers, i say not, the only difference between the better ones is usually the processor and the memory, which really depends on what sort of gaming you are doing. for the most part, i havent noticed any difference between the different styles.
i used to stand behind linksys, but ive had some problems with their commercial routers. i use belkin routers now and havent had any problem with them.

I am using DSL and I have a Westell 327W so there is no 3rd party firmware or any updates.
I know this router was used back in 2006 by verizon so it seems very old.

I may get the EnGenius for $52 in a few weeks. I think it would be worth a shot.

to be more specific, a router joins 2 networks together while a switch can't. also a router looks inside packets and routes them to different addresses while a switch can't. a switch basically just extends an existing network while a router creates and joins multiple networks together on top of routing packets and mapping ports. like i said, you can normally make a router act like a switch and simply extend an existing network but it doesnt do that by default.
