Android

Postby Jif » Mon Jun 14, 2010 2:44 pm

just wanted to say that the android mobile platform is fucking awesome.

i can tether my phone to my netbook without paying VZW the 30/mo
i have apps for wireless signal strength/troubleshooting
bluetooth file transfers b/w any bluetooth PC/phone/device
i have an app that lets me "bump" my android phone together with someone else's android or iphone and share personal contact card, contacts, pictures, etc
there's a dropbox app so i always have an online file depository without going through FTP
app to locate my phone if it's lost and even on silent
    craigslist app
an app that lets me mix my own drinks since i suck at that
it completely synced with our exchange server out of the box, including my primary calendar
the google maps+navigation app is absolutely superb
    slacker/pandora streaming internet radio
weather channel app that gives weather based on my current location
a really awesome sports app + widget for following scores and news
world cup app that shows all kinds of stats per game plus news
    pron
    automatic updates for every app
    FLASH
    google goggles is awesome
AN SD SLOT so i can store unlimited songs
and an AWESOME app for storing notes and reminders. the notes can be pictures, recipes, camera shots, whatever

plus of course the standard facebook, AIM, Gmail apps which are all solid. the exchange support is clutch so i can receive emails @ work without carrying my netbook around everywhere. unfortunately it's not working over our wifi yet b/c of our infrastructure...we have shitty household netgear APs throughout most of my school. this summer we'll be installing shiny new wireless N + MIMO BlueSocket APs which will let me give my phone a static IP and then i can open all its ports and have full net access on top of the exchange access.

lots of these apps are available on iphone, but now i dont have to use ATT, iTunes, and risk jailbreaking the phone to have it do what i'd want it to do. free tethering??? YES PLZ.

oh yea, the phone i bought was a Droid Eris i bought used from a guy who received a replacement unit from VZW. it arrived new (tho prolly a "new" refurb) with all accessories and 2 cases he'd purchased. It's a great phone for the price if you dont mind the lack of hardware keyboard. i thought i might have an issue with that but the virtual keyboard has been adequate for me. my typing is slowing than full QWERTY but the phone is thinner than most and easily fits in my pocket with the case. i love how it has a blackberry-style roller ball on the bottom that can be used for scrolling and selecting links on websites and apps instead of always using touchscreen. the battery life sucks...though it is a slightly used battery. i turn GPS/WiFi/bluetooth off to get more than 5 hours of standby time. if im browsing the internet over 3G or generally using apps, the phone lasts only 3-4 hours at best. pretty terrible. i have an app to let me adjust the brightness quickly and that also helps.

whatever, bored at work

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Two things:

How much do you pay a month?

and how does your free tethering work? Is that just how it is or did you have to root it?

there are several non-rooted apps that allow free tethering Bacon.
Beyond that, if at most hes paying is going to be for an unlimited data and texting/calls
most of these plans are sub 100 a month

Verizon for instance if he's doing purely data plan is going to be 29.99 for unlimited data.

dont need root, plenty of apps do it. there's also wifi and BT tethering apps so i can share my connection without needing the USB cable. plus android 2.2 is in beta testing now and will offer native mobile hotspot (phone becomes a wireless router) for up to 4 devices.

i'm still getting a 20%/mo discount from the 3 years ago that i worked at circuitshitty so i think my bill will be about $75/mo. it's been 50 even for the past year with the cheapest voice plan + 10/mo for txt and now the data plan is 30 - 20% = $24. i remember digitally signing the employee discount form in 2007 for the 20% discount and it said they can retroactively bill be for the 20% discount difference if they discover i am no longer an employee of circuit city...glad they have no idea CC doesnt exist anymore...

VZW isnt much better...much better 3g coverage tho. they charge for tethering and mobile hotspot but android bypasses all that.

still deciding what im doing when my contract expires in 8 months. definitely will be a 1-year contract this time, but might stick with VZW or go to TMo or Sprint 4G since they are finally getting some awesome phones now.

thats the weird part, vzw has a much wider 3g coverage, but its a really shitty network. att doesnt cover as much, but its much more powerful.
catch 22

yup. i wouldnt have 3G on ATT tho. its only 2.5G or edge or w/e the fuck their old shit is. mt speeds on VZW arent bad at all. browsing is tolerable.

yeah. supposedly att is rolling out a decent amount of 3g this summer but we'll see how that goes...

Yeah the only reason the iPhone doesn't have free tethering is because the app store is controlled and att will tell apple if there are things in there that they don't like.

also: If you switch to sprint, beware of the Evo. or any HTC phone for that matter. There have been lots of issues lately including the screen coming out of the phone and the touch screen working very badly when the phone is not grounded...

never heard of this grounding thing. im not sure ive ever used the phone without it in my hand. it is an HTC and probably exhibits the same poor response but it doesnt really bother me since it's always in my hand

just cause you aren't likely to use it without holding on to it with both hands doesn't make the point moot though. What it does is shows that the HTC phones have inferior build quality compared to phones that are already properly grounded

so? im not defending it...
HTC has been the best non-apple smartphone manufacturer for the last 5 years.

Id suggest looking at reviews for the Droid X and the Droid 2

Droid X (aka Droid Shadow) should be announced in the next 2 weeks for Vzw
Looks solid, only downside is it is about as large a form factor as you can get while allowing it to be called a phone, if i recall it also has an 8 megapixel camera on it capable of filming 720p video.

The Droid 2(only project name not the ship name) only has some vague pictures atm but it is being touted as the Droid v2, see original Droid and then look at what everything else does, supposedly its going to be a crazy strong phone but I dunno with Swype becoming so prevalent i rarely use my slide out keyboard anymore, its just so much faster on a phone to Swype.

I might be re-contracting to a Droid X, so long as VZW pulls the same thing ATT did by allowing people to freely bounce out of an older model and into a newer better phone without any issues.

Yeah I know Jif. I was just sayin

Also MOTO is supposed to be doing an event the day before the iPhone 4 is officially released. I'll admit, the android phones are getting a lot better which is superb for both parties.

yup, it's a win for everyone. without android, i wouldnt have been too interested in getting a smartphone.

i got my phone b/c i didnt want to lock in to a new contract yet but i still have 8 months left on existing one and 6 months before i can renew w/ new phone. i would have gotten the Droid or the Incredible (prolly the later since i looove HTC) if i signed a new contract. how do you get Swype? i've seen a coworker use it on his new Mytouch2 and it's fucking awesome, but havent really heard anything about it until now. i assumed it was part of his phone. HTC has some pre-installed apps and widgets and HTC SenseUI so i figured it was something like that
