- i can tether my phone to my netbook without paying VZW the 30/mo
i have apps for wireless signal strength/troubleshooting
bluetooth file transfers b/w any bluetooth PC/phone/device
i have an app that lets me "bump" my android phone together with someone else's android or iphone and share personal contact card, contacts, pictures, etc
there's a dropbox app so i always have an online file depository without going through FTP
app to locate my phone if it's lost and even on silent
an app that lets me mix my own drinks since i suck at that
it completely synced with our exchange server out of the box, including my primary calendar
the google maps+navigation app is absolutely superb
slacker/pandora streaming internet radio
weather channel app that gives weather based on my current location
a really awesome sports app + widget for following scores and news
world cup app that shows all kinds of stats per game plus news
automatic updates for every app
google goggles is awesome
AN SD SLOT so i can store unlimited songs
and an AWESOME app for storing notes and reminders. the notes can be pictures, recipes, camera shots, whatever
plus of course the standard facebook, AIM, Gmail apps which are all solid. the exchange support is clutch so i can receive emails @ work without carrying my netbook around everywhere. unfortunately it's not working over our wifi yet b/c of our infrastructure...we have shitty household netgear APs throughout most of my school. this summer we'll be installing shiny new wireless N + MIMO BlueSocket APs which will let me give my phone a static IP and then i can open all its ports and have full net access on top of the exchange access.
lots of these apps are available on iphone, but now i dont have to use ATT, iTunes, and risk jailbreaking the phone to have it do what i'd want it to do. free tethering??? YES PLZ.
oh yea, the phone i bought was a Droid Eris i bought used from a guy who received a replacement unit from VZW. it arrived new (tho prolly a "new" refurb) with all accessories and 2 cases he'd purchased. It's a great phone for the price if you dont mind the lack of hardware keyboard. i thought i might have an issue with that but the virtual keyboard has been adequate for me. my typing is slowing than full QWERTY but the phone is thinner than most and easily fits in my pocket with the case. i love how it has a blackberry-style roller ball on the bottom that can be used for scrolling and selecting links on websites and apps instead of always using touchscreen. the battery life sucks...though it is a slightly used battery. i turn GPS/WiFi/bluetooth off to get more than 5 hours of standby time. if im browsing the internet over 3G or generally using apps, the phone lasts only 3-4 hours at best. pretty terrible. i have an app to let me adjust the brightness quickly and that also helps.
whatever, bored at work
