Might be bying a car

Postby Bacon » Mon Aug 09, 2010 12:45 am

There is a guy selling a '97 Camaro RS Coupe for between 2500 and 3000. I test drove it yesterday and I like it a lot. unfortunately it rides pretty rough so i gotta get it to a mechanic to have a look at it before buying it. Sorry no pics of it yet but it's red and it has a T-Top

Definitely take it to a mechanic you know and trust.

Sounds like the tires are shit and the suspension might be fucked. Make sure you Carfax it before you think about buying it (or have the seller provide you with it).

the RS is the V6 and being 13-14 years old, it sounds like a decent deal. i thought it was an awesome deal if it didnt need work done but the v6 versions of mustangs and camaros have had very poor resale value for as long as i remember.

Yeah it definitely needs new tires. And when we drove it the suspension was pretty good. I guess what I mean by rough is that the engine is not smooth or at least not as smooth as it should be. It might just need a tune-up but i gotta get it looked at. I'm lookin at around $75 a month for insurance right now on my parent's plan

that's to be expected for a $3000 car. my first car was a 93 pontiac grand prix se 3.1 v6...jesus that car could move. bought it from my grandpop in FL. we flew down and drove it home...it rolled over 150k somewhere in georgia.

besides new brakes and struts and a leaky trunk lid, that car was solid as a rock. i think we put a new alternator in it but it never gave me any trouble. thing was built like a tank even down to the steel honeycomb rims.
/reminisce

im not sure what good a carfax will do. it's a 13-14 year old car with 150k miles on it for sale for $3000 or less. if it was in 3 crashes, what difference does it make at this point? honestly, you get what you pay for. im not sure what's expected in a carfax in this situation but i dont really see how a bad report can really hurt your opinion.

No dice on the car. Turns out it only runs on 5 cylinders until you give it gas. The mechanic said I was looking at about a grand of work to get it into good shape...

Changing over to a 2003 Lancer. Looks to be in pretty good shape. Gonna look at it more on monday hopefully.

5 Speed 4 Cyl with a cold air intake with K&N filter, Magnaflow cat-back, aftermarket headlights and taillights. aftermarket wheels. It all doesn't look spectacular but for my first car I could be doing a lot worse. It's got 190k miles on it but at least 100k of those are highway miles. He's askin 3k for it but he said he could probably go with 2.6k
