Squeeking noise/valve gaskets/leaking oil
Belt? What do you think bumbs... If so, can I replace it or should I take it in?

Re: Squeeking noise
Take it in!
You need to be sure its nothing major. Sounds like a simple belt noise but you need to be safe on this one. Best case scenario, you need a new serpentine belt. Worse case, something else.

Re: Squeeking noise
So the belt noise is gone. They replaced a bunch of shit:
The tech showed me the deflection pulley and it was fucked. I turned it with my hand and it was like turning a pepper mill. So that's all fixed...gotta love the $149.35 markup on parts.
Now this is what he told me needed to be done:
-VANOS oil line is leaking
-VANOS gasket needs replacing
-Exhaust manifold gasket needs replacing. The shield (?) is rattling on cold start. Once it expands it's fine.
The gasket is #3:

I guess the flat piece sticking out is the shield he's talking about, but I have no clue.
Lemme know what u think.

Re: Squeeking noise
Aight, I'm gonna try to find out where this shit is located so I can check it out. Will report back....
BTW, I remember seeing oil in this spot yesterday when I was taking a look. Take a look at the pic I attached, then read this:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh ... ?t=1764546
The pic is to the left of the engine if you're facing it from the front, near the head shield for the ac line and the secondary air pump.
Also check this, as I believe this is what the shop was referring to with the VANOS oil line:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh ... ight=vanos
You had that off at one point when you were working on my thermostat. Maybe it's just residue.

Re: Squeeking noise
So I was able to check this shit out today and here are my findings...
This is the shield thing they were talking about located on the exhaust manifold over the back 3 cylinders. As you can see, there is oil on it:
Another shot a little to the left:
I wiped the oil off so that I can monitor the possible leak:
This is the other shield that takes care of the front three cylinders. As you can see, no oil present:
So I'm going to watch it closely and see if anything happens. I suppose we could just replace the gasket on both sections and be done with it. I don't feel like just getting the rear one done and then have the front one start leaking a month after...
And this is the VANOS oil line. I wiped some oil crud off of it but it wasn't fresh(er) like the oil on the gasket shield:
Gonna monitor as well but seems like a non-issue.
This is the gasket w/ shield (#3, part 11621732969): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=10&hl=15
I can get a set for cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Fel-Pro-MS96521-E ... B000HUK9S6

Re: Squeeking noise
Revisiting this again...
I try to drive my car once a week to keep things from seizing up. I'm trying to sell this ticking time-bomb but no one is buying. Anyways, when I take it out I start smelling burning oil once the engine heats up (inside the cabin). Like you saw in the previous pics, there is a considerable amt of oil on the heat shield of the exhaust manifold. Also, I noticed a good amount of steam/smoke coming out of where the O2 sensor is. Take a look at the pic. The O2 sensor and cable is covered in oil and it looks like its melting or some shit. The heat shield is once again covered in oil. What a mess.
I can clean the heat shield periodically to keep the smell at bay, but what about the steam/smoke coming from the O2 sensor? Kinda worried about that.
I'm trying to patch this car up for little to no money just to sell it. The next poor schmuck can deal with the repairs.

Re: Squeeking noise
I see the valve cover gaskets leak on those things a lot. Very common to leak directly onto the exhaust causing it to burn.
Thats no small potato's job either.
Turn the air recirculation on so that only inside air comes out the vents. That way, only when the vent is in defrost position will it bring in that oil burning smell.
