yup got my FID and Permit to Purchase a Handgun today...didnt take me long. i'd been looking online for deals on Glock 19s and thats what i was after. Went shooting at a range with a friend and they didnt have a G19 so i picked the XD9. XD9 is very similar. the XD line was developed to be better Glocks. I was like 80% sure of getting the G19 until i shot the XD9. it's so similar it's scary. almost exact same length, similar width, polyurethane grip and much of the lower, and safety trigger. Also it was cheaper than the G19. ive seen the G19 online for $530 but all online/shipped gun purchases from places outside NJ have to be shipped to a NJ licensed gun dealership and the places usually charge $50-100 b/c of all the paperwork they have to fill out.
The range we went to was fucking sweet. it's a pricey $350/year membership, but that gets you unlimited free lane rentals for you and all friends, free handgun rentals, 10% off all gun purchases and 20% off ammo and targets and shit. So while i didnt buy a membership, buying the gun saved me $85 in lane fees and discounted ammo plus a free 30 day full range membership.
basically they rape walk-in customers but members shoot cheap as fuck. i only have to use their ammo if i use their equipment and with the 20% discount the prices arent terrible if i wanna drool over the 20-something 1911's on display.
don't have any ammo yet and still need a cleaning kit and ear protection. gonna want a bigger mag as well. came with 2 10 rds...ewe.
gun was $550 but i'd already had $150 racked up in lane fees, ammo, ear and eye protection b/w 2 of us and buying the gun saved me half of that so really it cost me about $475 and get to go back for free whenever i want until september. i dont think it was a bad deal.
buying a gun online to have it shipped to them woulda be an extra $100 and i've heard most places charge 50-100, so basically i can add $50-100 to every potential online gun price...fucking awesome.
so now...what's the best ammo to buy for self defense and whats the best for range shooting?
