P0406 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Position Sensor High.
This means that the EGR valve is commanded to open or close to a certain point and the PCM (powertrain control module) does not detect that it has done so. It could have a problem with the electricial end of the system but usually it just gets gunked up with carbon from the exhaust.
The EGR valve is an emissions control device that, upon PCM request, will open and allow exhaust gasses to be returned to the engine and be mixed with the air / fuel ration. This mix helps lower the internal temperature of the engine, lowering NOx (oxides of nitrogen), a poisoness gas emitted when the engine gets to hot.
Worst case sceniaro with the EGR faliure is stalling at stop signs and red lights. Upon starting, will only run if gas held down slightly. Best case sceniaro is check engine light comes on and nothing else happens.
This is a pattern faliure for these vehicles and 99% of the time is fixed be replacing the EGR valve. It is located just above the alternator, just to the left (sitting in the drivers seat) of the washer fluid fill. You can do it nig, be a boss!
